The Italian Constitution is the written, voted, programmatic, secular and democratic State Law that is the basis of the legal system of the Italian Republic. Approved in '47, it came into force in '48 with its 139 articles.

Art.1 Italy is a democratic Republic, founded on work. Sovereignty belongs to the people, who exercise it in the forms and within the limits of the Constitution.
Art.3 All citizens have equal social dignity and are equal before the law, without distinction of sex, race, language, religion, political opinion, personal and social conditions.
It is the duty of the Republic to remove economic and social obstacles which, by limiting the freedom and equality of citizens, impede the full development of the human person and the effective participation of all workers in the political, economic and social organization of the country.
Art. 11 Italy repudiates war as an instrument of aggression against the freedom of other peoples and as a means of resolving international disputes; it consents, on equal terms with other States, to the limitations of sovereignty necessary for an order that ensures peace and justice among Nations; it promotes and favors international organizations aimed at this purpose.
