The Gospels are the famous sacred books belonging to the New Testament on which all Christianity is based; they tell the life of Jesus, from his birth to his death and Resurrection. Gospel comes from the Greek word eu anghélion , literally "good news". Several books have been written about the life of Christ, but only four have been considered "canonical", recognized by the Church, the Gospel according to Matthew, the Gospel according to Mark, the Gospel according to Luke and the Gospel according to John. The others are defined as apocryphal, or texts "to be hidden", because they are in contrast with the Christian canons and dictates.
The Gospel according to Matthew narrates the birth and childhood of Jesus, his baptism, his life spent in Galilee, his journey to and entry into Jerusalem, his crucifixion, his death, his burial and his Resurrection.
The Gospel according to Mark recounts the life of Jesus from his baptism by John the Baptist to the empty tomb and the announcement of his Resurrection: it focuses mainly on the events of the last week of his life.
The Gospel according to Luke opens with the miraculous births of John the Baptist and Jesus, and then describes the preaching of the Messiah, his exorcisms and miracles, his relationship with his disciples, his Resurrection and his ascension to heaven.
The Gospel according to John is notably different from the other three gospels, it delves into the question of the identity of Christ, his being "Divine" and at the same time his Humanity which leads him to share in the sufferings of the world.
